The German automaker is gearing up its 5-Series which will be built on a new platform, offering wide range of engines, lightweight materials and design inspiration from 7-Series.

New 5-Series is likely to be introduced at the end of next year and will take the fight to Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and many more.

Let’s start with the powertrain; the new 5-Series has a plug-in Hybrid powertrain with a 2.0 litre four cylinder BMW petrol engine. The engine is paired to a single electric motor. Both electric motor and the engine combine to deliver 242bhp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The same setup has already been seen in the 3-Series eDrive.

In the past, 5-Series was famous for its six-cylinder engines but the new setup has received a new engine family that includes both petrol and diesel powered engines available in both 2.0 litre and 3.0 litre capacities.

There is a also rumour that the new engine line-up will benefit from BMW’s 1.5 litre petrol and diesel turbocharged three-cylinder engines. The new engine line-up will help BMW to decrease the overall emission rates according to the proposed standards by the EU. A senior BMW official suggested that it is very early to make any conclusion on the final engine line-up, but we are expecting that the three-cylinder engines are the future of BMW 5-Series.

Efficient dynamics technology as an engineering exercise would be great to make a combination with diesel engines. BMW always cares about its customers and before making any major change it is very important to ensure customer acceptance.

In United States, it is very likely that BMW will offer 5-Series with newly developed V8 BMW engines, because this combination is very popular in the country. BMW 550i uses a 4.4 litre engine, but it is not confirmed that whether the same will be offered in the UK.

BMW plans to rival Mercedes-Benz E-Class with its all-new 5-Series by 2017 BMW has its eyes on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF in the UK markets.
