AMG 5.5 Litre V8 BiTurbo

You will not see the 5.5 litre AMG V8 engine in any AMG models from 2016 because it will be replaced by a 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 engine

Mercedes-AMG has decided to replace their 5.5 litre V8 engine line-up with an economical but downsized 4.0 litre engine powered by a twin turbocharger. The new engine will lead the AMG models from 2016 and 5.5 litre engine will permanently be discontinued.

This 5.5 litre engine is not that old as it was introduced in 2011 and much praised for its performance and agility during its career. It is also known for the strong throttle response and crispy sound. The AMG 5.5-liter twin turbo engine was made likely by an exceptional combination of advanced high-tech systems such as Piezo injector, twin turbochargers and the ECO Start-Stop function. This Mercedes engine produces 585 bhp and 663 lb-ft of torque from 3750 rpm while it has relatively higher carbon emissions of 246g/km.

The replacement engine is not new though because it is already leading the Mercedes-AMG GT models and about to be fitted in the new C63. The 4.0 litre engine offers most modern turbocharging technology and cranks out 476 horsepower along with 479 lb-ft of torque in the GT or 510 bhp and 516 lb-ft of torque in the GT S version. It is known as M177 4.0-liter V8 twin turbo engine and offer attributes very close to the M178, which is used in Mercedes-AMG GT sports cars. The innovative V8 is famous for its lightweight design and environment-friendly compatibility.

Apart from its smaller propositions, the new engine is very capable and can deliver even more power than the M157. New engine has dramatically excellent fuel economy and low carbon emissions and meets the Euro6 carbon emissions standards. The 5.5 litre engine will be used in the forthcoming GLE Coupe, introduced at the Detroit Motor Show.
